Chemfluor® Tubing

Chemfluor® (PTFE) Tubing

In chemistry, PTFE is a synthetic fluoropolymer which finds numerous applications. PTFE is most well known by the  DuPont brand name Teflon and has the lowest coefficient of friction of any polymer

Because of its molecular structure, traditional PTFE cannot be processed by melting, but must be compressed into shapes and heated under pressure (sintered). In contrast, FEP and PFA are melt-processable by conventional thermoplastic processing methods, including injection, transfer, blow, and compression molding and by extrusion.

PTFE is a fluorocarbon solid, as it is a high molecular weight compound consisting wholly of carbon and fluorine. Fluorocarbons are not as susceptible to the London dispersion force due to the high electronegativity of fluorine. Therefore, water and water-containing substances, and oil and oil-containing substances, like most foods do not wet PTFE, as adhesion to PTFE surfaces is inhibited. Due to this property PTFE is used as a non-stick coating for pans and other cookware. It is very non-reactive, partly because of the strength of carbon–fluorine bonds and so it is often used in containers and pipework for reactive and corrosive chemicals. Where used as a lubricant, PTFE reduces friction, wear and energy consumption of machinery.

Chemfluor® FEP Tubing

Teflon-FEP, or FEP is a copolymer of hexafluoropropylene and tetrafluoroethylene. It differs from the PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) resins in that it is melt-processible using conventional injection molding and screw extrusion techniques. Teflon FEP is more transparent than PTFE and has better gas and vapor permeability properties than PTFE

FEP possesses a very high degree of stress crack resistance, a low coefficient of friction, exceptional dielectric properties, heat resistance, retention of properties after service at 400°F (204°C) with useful properties at -454°F (-270°C), and meets FDA 21CFR.177.155 compliancy. Teflon FEP tubing fully complies with the requirements of USP class VI criteria.

Teflon-FEP is very similar in composition to the fluoropolymers PTFE and Teflon-PFA. Teflon-FEP and Teflon-PFA both share PTFE's useful properties of low friction and non-reactivity, but are more easily formable. Teflon-FEP is softer than PTFE and melts at 260 °C; it is highly transparent, resistant to sunlight, and has the widest temperature capability of any plastic tubing.

Important applications are linings for pipe and chemical processing equipment, roll covers, and numerous wire and cable applications, including aircraft wire, plenum cable, fire alarm cable, and well logging cable. Heat-shrinkable FEP tubing is available.

Chemfluor® PFA Tubing

Teflon-PFA, or PFA is a type of fluoropolymer with properties similar to (PTFE). It differs from the PTFE resins in that it is melt-processable using conventional injection molding and screw extrusion techniques. It retains higher mechanical strength at elevated temperatures compared to PTFE and has a higher continuous service temperature than FEP. Teflon PFA tubing fully complies with the requirements of USP class VI criteria.

Teflon-PFA is very similar in composition to the fluoropolymers PTFE, FEP, PFA, and FEP both share PTFE's useful properties of low coefficient of friction and non-reactivity, but are more easily formable. FEP is softer than PTFE and melts at 260 °C; it is highly transparent and resistant to sunlight. Teflon PFA has the widest temperature capability of any plastic tubing.

PFA is preferred when extended service is required in hostile environments involving chemical, thermal, and mechanical stress

PFA offers high melt strength, stability at high processing temperatures, excellent crack and stress resistance, a low coefficient of friction, and more than 10 times the Flex life of FEP.

It has high resistance to creep and retention of properties after service at 500°F (260°C), with useful properties at -320°F (95°C). PFA also meets FDA 21CFR.177.1550.
